The various methods of communications in Canada are just what you'd expect from a modern industrialized country. They have a competitive telecommunications industry so you can be assured of decent service at reasonable prices.
Phone
Phone numbers in Canada use a 3-7 format. They consist of a three digit area code followed by a seven digit local number. The international country code for Canada is 1. The emergency services number is 911, the same as in the U.S. Directory assistance can be found by dialing 411 and operator assistance is 0.
Mobiles
Mobile phones or cell phones are prolific in Canada but due to the country's large size, not all areas are covered by mobile networks. Canada operates on GSM 850MHz/1900MHz frequency bands, which differs from the 900MHz/1800MHz bands used in most other countries. If you plan to use your existing handset in Canada, make sure it is compatible with these bands or it will not work.
Cell phone numbers in canada have seven digits, just like local landline numbers.
Internet
Internet access is easy to come by in Canada with terminals in public libraries and in the bigger towns you'll find internet cafes. Expect to pay around CAD$1-$3 per hour. If you're in one of Canada's cities and have your own laptop or mobile device, you can enjoy the convenience of WiFi hotspots which are common.
Writing home the old fashioned way is easy too via Canada Post. They provide reliable delivery, but can be expensive when posting items overseas. Some drug stores offer an after hours service if you miss the rigid Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm post office trading hours.
